WHAT MAN IN HIS RIGHT mind would have a woman like Melanie and want someone else? Not only was she beautiful, successful and smart, but there was something about her that Coop knew would make her a good parent.
He found himself caring less about the game and more about the woman sitting on the bed of his truck. âMy brothers and I are fit as a fiddle. Itâs hard to comprehend how one of our own got sick.â He investigated the distance long enough to gather his emotions. âWe donât mind getting our hands dirty and thereâs not a lazy bone in any of our bodies. Weâre a bit crude and impulsive at times, but weâve been taught by Ma to be a gentleman. This might be the way we were brought up, but I have to believe itâs in our gene pool too. My brothers are damn good stock.â He slid off the tailgate, feeling a bit emotional. The feeling snared him out of nowhere. He held out his hand for her, âReady?â
âThe gameâs not over,â she said.
âThe tourâs not over either. I thought you might like to meet Grandma. Sheâs a spitfire and full of tale.â Coop decided he probably needed a good kick in the ass for taking Melanie to meet Franny Maw, but she loved visitors and sheâd be thrilled that she got to meet someone who didnât live in Dove Grey. She referred to outsiders as âSpectatorsâ. He told Melanie a bit more about his grandmaâs story as they drove along the backroads toward Dawson Creek Ranch.
âDoes she live on the ranch?â
âShe lives in the guest cottage, but the main house had been her home most of her life.â
âThank you for this, Coop.â
âFor what?â He slowed the truck, not in any hurry to get anywhere. He liked hanging out with her.
âNot just anyone would be willing to take me around to meet their family under the circumstances.â
Coop never much believed in fate, but something about this situation made him wonder if Cade had a hand in it, somehow, someway. Maybe he was looking down and knew this was what his family needed...possibly what Melanie and her unborn child needed too. Coop had never met anyone who he seemed to click with so fast.
His phone vibrated from his pocket and he pulled it out, reading the screen. It was Miller. He switched on the turn signal and pulled over. âI need to take this.â He slid out of the driverâs side and walked over to the tree line to talk in private.
âHi, Miller. Itâs Coop.â
âI wrote up some paperwork for you.â
Coopâs gaze naturally shifted across the distance to where Melanie sat in the passenger seat of his truck. âIâm tied up right now. Do you have some time on your schedule later?â
