WHAT MAN IN HIS RIGHT mind would have a woman like Melanie and want someone else? Not only was she beautiful, successful and smart, but there was something about her that Coop knew would make her a good parent.

He found himself caring less about the game and more about the woman sitting on the bed of his truck. “My brothers and I are fit as a fiddle. It’s hard to comprehend how one of our own got sick.” He investigated the distance long enough to gather his emotions. “We don’t mind getting our hands dirty and there’s not a lazy bone in any of our bodies. We’re a bit crude and impulsive at times, but we’ve been taught by Ma to be a gentleman. This might be the way we were brought up, but I have to believe it’s in our gene pool too. My brothers are damn good stock.” He slid off the tailgate, feeling a bit emotional. The feeling snared him out of nowhere. He held out his hand for her, “Ready?”

“The game’s not over,” she said.

“The tour’s not over either. I thought you might like to meet Grandma. She’s a spitfire and full of tale.” Coop decided he probably needed a good kick in the ass for taking Melanie to meet Franny Maw, but she loved visitors and she’d be thrilled that she got to meet someone who didn’t live in Dove Grey. She referred to outsiders as “Spectators”. He told Melanie a bit more about his grandma’s story as they drove along the backroads toward Dawson Creek Ranch.

“Does she live on the ranch?”

“She lives in the guest cottage, but the main house had been her home most of her life.”

“Thank you for this, Coop.”

“For what?” He slowed the truck, not in any hurry to get anywhere. He liked hanging out with her.

“Not just anyone would be willing to take me around to meet their family under the circumstances.”

Coop never much believed in fate, but something about this situation made him wonder if Cade had a hand in it, somehow, someway. Maybe he was looking down and knew this was what his family needed...possibly what Melanie and her unborn child needed too. Coop had never met anyone who he seemed to click with so fast.

His phone vibrated from his pocket and he pulled it out, reading the screen. It was Miller. He switched on the turn signal and pulled over. “I need to take this.” He slid out of the driver’s side and walked over to the tree line to talk in private.

“Hi, Miller. It’s Coop.”

“I wrote up some paperwork for you.”

Coop’s gaze naturally shifted across the distance to where Melanie sat in the passenger seat of his truck. “I’m tied up right now. Do you have some time on your schedule later?”
